This introduction to RAN explains what it is and why it is important to understand it. It introduces the concept of the Double Deficit of having difficulties with both phonological skills and with speed of retrieving familiar information, which is the case for many struggling readers.

This may need to be accounted for when interventions are planned. If it is identified early there may be some scope for improvements with possible later gains in reading fluency.
